“Leadership qualities” has been a term we have heard all our lives, but what does it really mean to be a leader? Be upfront with your subordinates

It is one of the most important values that a leader must possess. It is important, to be honest with your subordinates at a workplace, for them to follow your example and be truthful to you. If you make honesty and ethical behavior a key value, it would reflect on your employees as well. This will help your team become a unit and work together to achieve set goals.

Be able to stand by your decisions

In a startup or at a company, sometimes you feel unsure about the decisions you have made, it reflects on your employees and can be noticed by the lack of motivation in their work. Confidence in your body language and decision making helps in establishing trust between the leader and followers, but if seen under confident or overconfident and you manage to lose team morale. A leader should be able to take the right decisions and stand by them. It is highly recommended that you consider other’s opinions before taking a decision as many people will benefit or suffer from your decisions. You should analyze each scenario and its possible outcomes to choose the one which benefits you and your team the most.

Be able to inspire others

Convincing people to follow you can be a daunting task and can only be possible if you inspire people to do so. In high-pressure situations if you think positively, solutions to your problems will present itself; it can also help your team in dealing with the stress. It also helps in keeping the motivation levels high as motivation acts as a most basic powerhouse to perform tasks. The employees should also be accountable for the tasks assigned to them by you, which instills a sense of responsibility in the individual. Praising people for their hard work and helping people who make mistakes helps you in taking care of the team they are responsible for.

As a human being, it is impossible to do everything on your own; hence you can focus on the important responsibilities and leave the rest of the tasks to others. Micromanaging every task performed by the subordinate develops a lack of trust and more importantly, diverts your ability to focus on important matters, as you should be.

According to Steve Jobs “Innovation distinguishes between a leader and a follower.” Creativity and an innovative mind help you to stand out from the crowd and also thinking outside the box helps to come up with better solutions. Brainstorming ideas together in a group also helps the people feel part of the team as they feel directly involved. They also feel respected and wanted and at times, which makes them look forward to working under you.

A leader should always understand the issues that affect the employees of the company. Empathy is the ability to understand or feel what your employees are experiencing. At times, leaders need to look after their team‘s feelings. Making things personal while encountering problems, or assigning blame to individuals, can be very unprofessional.

To become a good leader, you must have all these qualities. It is important to set a good example for others to follow. This is why commitment, passion, empathy, honesty, Good communication skills and decision-making capabilities also play a vital role in the success and failure of a leader.
